21/12/2005 – Boris has been put peacefully to sleep.

His fosterer Kelly says: “He came to me at the age of sixteen after his owner had become evicted from a squat. When he arrived it quickly became apparent that he was not rehomable due to his incontinence…not many people would take on a doddery old boy with a ‘drippy willy’. So Boris became an oldies club sponsor dog and he lived out his last days here with me and the doodle dogs.

In the last few weeks Boris has given us many laughs and often amazed us with his pluck and determination to get his own way despite his body letting him down. He has loved being part of the pack and on his good days has run around the garden with the spirit of a dog half his age. He has been an absolute angel in putting up with the constant bathing every morning because of the puddle he woke up in after a deep sleep and he adored the attention of being groomed afterwards. He always looked gorgeous after a proper groom…until he shook himself and ended up looking like a mop again. ”

The Oldies Club were alerted to Boris’s plight when his previous owner was attempting to sell him through the free ads. We called her up and discovered that she didn’t really want to be doing that but had been able to find no rescue that would take in a dog of sixteen years old.

Boris was in dire need of a make-over: his fur was dreadlocked with his own faeces and old food and he was really quite a mess. It took me two hours to gently relieve the old boy of all the matts and debris. After a bath in tee trea shampoo Boris was looking and smelling much sweeter.

A trip to the vet revealed that Boris had an enlarged prostate which was causing him to involuntarily leak urine; the cure for this was for him to be neutered. We would not usually put such an old chap through this op but we had no choice with Boris as the only alternative was to put him to sleep and Boris isn’t ready to give up on life just yet.

Last Wednesday (26th Oct) Boris went into the vets for the day and came out a new man… well, dog! Whilst under anaesthetic he had his castration, a wart cauterised from his eyelid which was also causing him problems, and also a dental – if you can call it a dental as many teeth fell out during the attempt to descale them! At this stage his heart rate dropped so he had to be brought round from the anaesthetic in a hurry and didn’t have the small cyst removed from the top of his ear, but that is nothing to worry about.

Since his op Boris has been absolutely fine. He’s mixing well with my other pets, sleeps lots as any old boy who’s had such a long life would, and is no trouble at all.

____________________________________________________________

Every so often, the Oldies Club comes across a dog like Boris, whose history, medical or behavioural condition are such that we could not ask a potential adopter to take them on. In Boris’ case, his likely life span means we would prefer him not to face the upheaval of transferring to a new home for what may be just a few months.

Instead, Boris will be given a lifetime foster placement, ensuring he will be cared for and loved for as long as his quality of life remains undimmed. By clicking on the Paypal link at the top of the page, you can make a donation to help us support Boris and needy dogs like him; the dogs who need our help most of all.

Alternatively, visit our Sponsor a Dog page to find out all about sponsoring an oldie by cheque, standing order or Paypal. Thank you.
