26/6/08 – Oldies Club are very sorry to announce that Issie has sadly passed away. She was a much loved dog who gave a lot of joy to her family and she will be greatly missed. Run free Issie!

9/2/2006 Adorable Issie is staying in her foster home forever!

Issie is a typical Spinone who needs some ongoing medication. Issie is not an easy first dog, but she is a real character who would flourish in a more experienced home with no small children or cats. Could you help?

Issie is a typical orange and white Spinone. She’s 11 years old, spayed, and vaccinated. She is a vocal dog that likes to talk to you, and will tell you in no uncertain terms if you don’t stick to her routine. She is currently being left for up to 5 hours with the company of other dogs, and is fine with that.

Issie loves her cuddles and tickles, and expects lots of attention! She is generally a kind, gentle dog with humans. She will whack you with her paws when she wants something though – which can hurt! She also likes to chase. For this reason, Issie needs a home with no young children or small animals. She could be homed with other dogs, or as an only dog, as long as her new owner is experienced with large messy gun-dogs and able to cope with her eccentricities!

She enjoys being brushed but detests having a bath. She will jump into any water and mud she comes across whilst out. She quite happily munches mud and the odd bit of grass she can find, so the hair around her mouth gets very mucky and has all sorts stuck in it. Luckily, she is happy to let you clip this hair so it doesn’t get quite so mucky!

Issie lis definitely a “bloke’s dog”, and we are looking for owners where there is a man of the house as she definitely responds more to men than women.

Issie has been in Oldies Club foster care since her last owners who had her from a pup at 8 weeks old very sadly had to let her go under circumstances out of their control. One condition for any new home is that you must stay in contact with them (as well as the Oldies Club!) to update on Issie’s progress and send photos. Issie’s previous owners have advised us that they will pay for the medication for her thyroid problem and dust allergy for the rest of her life.

Issie has been an only dog and was spoilt rotten, which makes a nice change for the Oldies Club! She is now looking for a home that will give her all she needs in her old age – can you help?

Issie’s Medical Condition
Although Issie is fit and active, she has needed quite a bit of veterinary treatment in the last year. She has had an operation on one of her ears, a skin complaint (now cleared up), and a large lump (cyst) removed from her neck in December 2005, so she had a large wound on her neck when we took her in. It has knitted together nicely for her and her hair growing back – once her hair has grown back fully in a few weeks it shouldn’t be noticeable though.

Issie also needs some ongoing care for existing conditions.
– Her ears need to be cleaned weekly (her foster mum says “they are very yicky!”
– she has a thyroid problem and is overweight as a result (though she has lost some weight), and needs a daily tablet for this
– She has a dust allergy and needs a steroid every other day for the rest of her life for this. At present this seems to be keeping it well under control, but it needs an eye kept on it.

What sort of home?
Issie lived in a cottage in the country so is not used to traffic, pavements or walking on the lead – she is used to running off lead in fields, and normally would expect to walk 5 miles every day. However, as she still has the wound on her neck, she is currently making do with shorter walks on a makeshift harness, as she cannot wear a collar at present. She is not good at coming when called either, though she is very food motivated, so she should be reasonably quick to learn with the right incentive!

Issie is currently sharing her foster home with 2 Vizslas and a Collie. She gets on well with them now, but she is very food obsessed. When she arrived she was very food possessive, toy possessive and intimidating to the other dogs. Her foster home has been successfully working on this, but she will probably try it on again in a new environment. As her new owner you would have to understand this, and work with Issie to make sure she understands that no means no, and that sharing is allowed!

Issie is an expert thief. You can’t leave anything out as she will have it. Even if you’re in the same room. You don’t see it going. She has apparently had 2 Xmas turkeys before today.

Now Issie’s neck is healed and she is getting over her food and toy aggression, she has started to play with the other dogs. At the moment she doesn’t seem fully confident with them, having been an only dog for so long, but this is improving. We are told that Issie has taken a dislike to Staffordshire Bull Terriers after a bad experience with one, so we would prefer a home for her where there are no Staffies.

Issie has not been taught to be gentle – she will bite your hand to get a treat, and likes to play fight roughly. Her fosterers are working on teaching her to be more polite, and she is picking it up well – again, this is something that might relapse in a new environment, and you will need to continue working with her.

If you would like to know more about Issie, please contact her foster mum Michelle on michelle.weber@ntlworld.com. If you want to adopt Issie, you will need to come and visit her and get to know her first, as she isn’t an easy first dog and we want to be sure that she and you are going to be really happy together. Ideally we’d like a home experienced with Spinones, though if you have experience with other large messy gun-dogs, that would also do nicely!
