Oscar was first advertised on the Oldies Club website back in October 2005. You can see his original advert here, and read his rehoming story, which tells how we weren’t at first sure if he was fit enough to be rehomed, and how well that turned out.

We have now heard from Oscar’s owners that he had to be put to sleep on the 17th March. The Oldies Club would like to offer their special thanks for taking on a big old black dog that seemed not to have long to go and giving him a wonderful home, and also pay tribute to Oscar, that very special boy who gave his owners “the best 3 1/2 years of our lives”.

“Oscar struggled on and off with Arthritis which over the 3 1/2 years he was with us gradually got worse. During the last year or so he had managed to get by with a very good quality of life on various medications that did not have any adverse effects on him and he was able to carry on as he always did. Over the Christmas period we realised that he was struggling more and more and we had cut the lengths of his walks down and tried him on alternative medications.

It got to the stage in March where he didn’t want to go for walks any more but could manage being helped into the garden. We knew at this stage that he didn’t have long left but carried on for another two weeks or so exhausting every option with the vets until we decided that it was time for him to go. The really upsetting part for us was that apart from his legs, the rest of him was in perfect working order but we knew that we couldn’t keep him here because of our feelings. The vets came to the house and Oscar passed away peacefully in his Mothers arms. We respectfully had him cremated and we think we will put his ashes in the garden where he used to love sniffing in or just laying down in the sunshine.

We would like to thank The Oldies Club for giving us the opportunity to give Oscar a forever home. We picked Oscar up on November 12th 2005 from Mr Watson his fosterer who lived on an Air Force Base and since then it really has been the best 3 1/2 years of our lives and we think Oscar would have thought the same. He was a well known character by a lot of people in our area, (not just dog owners), who when they saw him always used to come over to us and ask how he was getting on and he always managed to get a treat out of them. Although at first he didn’t like any other dogs he met he eventually made some good doggie friends namely Bess, Barney, Holly and Rubbish. We know he will be dearly missed by a lot of people and pooches. It will take us a long time to get over his loss, but we hope The Oldies Club will consider us for adoption in the future.”
