Jessie

23/09/10 We’re very happy to update with the news that Jessie has found a permanent foster home – it is her original foster home and we know she will be very happy there.

———————
Jessie needs somewhere to go, urgently. She is in a temporary foster home but can only stay there until October. We are therefore appealing to anyone that could offer her a permanent foster home to get in touch ASAP. A permanent foster home means that she will stay there for the rest of her life, as an Oldies Club sponsor dog, with all of her vet bills covered by the Oldies Club. She needs a quiet, child-free home where she is the only dog, but she is good with cats.

Of course, if you want to offer Jessie a permanent home and are happy to cover vet bills yourself, we would be more than delighted to rehome her in the normal way; we are simply offering her as a sponsor dog because we want her to find a suitable home quickly.

If you read this page earlier this week, you will know that Jessie was seeking a place with her brother, Wag. But, very sadly, Wag suddenly became very ill and after having tests and a scan was found to have an enlarged liver, a mass in his stomach, and a problem with one of his kidneys. The vet advised that there was no hope of improvement and as Wag was not at all well, he sadly had to be put to sleep.

Rest in peace little Wag

The only good news is that Jessie doesn’t seem to be missing Wag; in fact, she is in good spirits and is enjoying getting all the treats to herself. What a resilient little girl she is.

Jessie came into our care over 6 months ago (with Wag) and they didn’t have anyone wanting to adopt them. It isn’t fair to have to move Jessie from one foster home to another, and we certainly don’t want to reach the position where we have to put this little one into kennels. Jessie is a delightful little dog and in a quiet home she will make a super companion.

Here is some new information on Jessie from her temporary foster carer:

Japanese Chin dogs have been a favourite of Japanese emperors for over 1,000 years, one of whom decreed that all Japanese Chin should be worshipped! Sadly, this doesn’t seem to be the case for Jessie, who is an absolutely adorable, 15 year old girl. She (and Wag) has been overlooked and in an Oldies Club foster home for over 6 months, and we simply can’t imagine why. Jessie is a special girl who should have a permanent home of her own to enjoy for the rest of their days.

Character:
She is a sweet, loving and rather comical girl, who acts much younger than she is. Jessie is practical, smart and likes to check things out. She is a little wary of strangers but soon gets to know them and enjoys a fuss in her own time. She is quite timid and scared of quick movements, so children can frighten her, though she is never aggressive. She’s a little sweetheart too, and likes to check where you are by poking her head round the door every now and then. She doesn’t seem to understand many commands …. or perhaps just likes ignoring them … though it could be due to her hearing not being too good.

Perfect Home: The perfect home for Jessie is a quiet, retirement home with a garden and without young children or other dogs. She was great with the cats in her previous foster home though so she can live with cats. She tends to ignore other dogs when out and about. She is settled in her ways and routine, and certainly enjoys being the centre of attention. She loves human company and likes to be close by, so a home where someone is around most of the time would be perfect for her. She can be left alone for a couple of hours, but needs newspaper putting down for her to use if it’s for a longer time … she can’t hold her bladder for too long! She is housetrained and uses the garden so long as she has access to it. The garden is her favourite place to have a sniff and potter round and she really enjoys spending lots of time there. She doesn’t go upstairs and is happy in the kitchen overnight where she will carefully use newspaper if necessary.

Likes: Top of the list is food! She gets so excited at meal times and simply wolfs her food as though she hasn’t been fed for a week! Then, after checking there is no chance of any more, a nap after to let everything settle. She does like to sleep, especially in the mornings. She gets excited about a short, leisurely stroll and walks perfectly on the lead, though she tires after about 15 minutes or so. She loves human company and enjoys being fussed and stroked. She also enjoys a trip in the car and travels well.

Dislikes:
Jessie can easily be frightened so she doesn’t like sudden movement and jumps if you come up behind her. She will bark at visitors when they arrive, but soon quietens when they are through the door.

Health: Jessie seems to be in good health, taking no medication. Her hearing and eyesight are not as good as they were, but she is lively and has joie de vivre. She is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and flea-treated. At her vet-check, the vet concluded that she is in good health considering her ages.

Summary:
Jessie is a real character, and is very sweet, good-natured and a terrific companion dog. She doesn’t do commands and likes her own way, but, at her age, she probably deserves it! She will make an entertaining addition to the right household and give plenty of affection and enjoyment. It looks like the Japanese emperors knew just what terrific, little dogs they are!
