23/11/21 – Beautiful Flash has very sadly had to be put to sleep. He had been deteriorating for a while, had lost interest in food and he became very weak. The vet suspected there was something nasty going on and it was no longer fair on poor Flash to keep him going. He passed away very peacefully.
Fabulous Flash is a gorgeous 13 year old Lurcher who originally came into Oldies Club care in June 2017 because his owner was going to work abroad. Flash was originally up for adoption but due to a patient wait of over 500 days for the elusive perfect home and the need for experienced handling due to some of his behavioural issues it was decided that he would become a long term foster and join our sponsor dog scheme.
Flash loves men and is great with his male fosterer to whom he bonded with really quickly. He isnt as fond of women but his female fosterer has worked hard on winning him over and he has now also bonded with her.
Flash has quirks but his fosterers do not have problems with dealing with these as they are very experienced with sighthounds. If Flash doesnt like something he will growl a warning but he shows no issues with following it up with his teeth if the sitution isnt rectified to his satisfaction.
Flash really doesn’t like visting the vets and needs to wear a muzzle for visits. He isnt a big fan of the muzzle either but thanks to the dedication of his fosterers he now trusts them enough to tolerate it being put on and wearing it. Flash doesn’t like people to get too close to his face, but he is OK for his fosterer to stroke or gently scratch it.
Flash was included in a Daily Mail feature about older dogs in rescue in 2017, and although Flash subsequently had some interest the perfect home never came along. We are delighted to be able to include some of the photos of Flash that were taken by Damien McFadden for the feature.
When Flash first moved to his permanent foster home he wasnt a big fan of all of the resident dogs and would act out aggressively towards some members of the pack. Over time the dogs have sorted out their pecking order and Flash is able to interact more freely with them. Flash will instigate and interact in play session and the fosterers will only step in if it starts getting out of hand. He is now only crated when the fosterers go out.
On the whole Flash is a pretty healthy dog although he does have a problem with one of his paws which is still currently under investigation. He does have arthritis in it but the vets want to see if there is something more causing the pain. Flash occassionally wears a boot when it is sore. He is on loxicom as well as a supplement to help. Even though his paw can be sore it does not stop him zooming around the garden or playing with his ball.
If you would love to offer a home to an oldie but your circumstances aren’t suitable, perhaps you would be kind enough to sponsor Flash , or one of the other special oldies we are caring for in our sponsor dog scheme.
