13/9/22 – We are delighted to say that Chester has gone off to his new home!
Chester is a fun loving British Bulldog boy of 7 years. He came into Oldies Club care because he found the young children in his home a bit alarming at times. He is now in a foster home in Cwmbran, South Wales.
Good in foster: Chester settled into his new surroundings in less than two weeks. His character and love of games are charming everyone. He follows his foster carer around and is super affectionate with his carer’s friend when she visits. Chester is a ladies’ man, it seems!
Loves company: Chester would like a home where someone is around most of the time. He can be left for short periods but he cries at first. A nanny cam has shown that he then settles down but he’d rather not have to be alone very often.
Worried about other dogs: Chester doesn’t like being approached by other dogs. He doesn’t react as such but he wants to get away from them and gets stressed.
No cats please: Chester thinks cats are his nemesis and lets them know they can jolly well jog on, even if he just sees them on the TV. Clever boy!
Older children are OK: Chester doesn’t like being near little, loud and quick people but from about age 13, he thinks youngsters are great fun and would happily live with dog savvy ones. He got very excited when a teenager visited his foster home because he does like to play. He just needs his rest sometimes, too.
Likes easy walks: Chester currently has 2 walks a day of about 25 minutes. That’s quite long enough for him. He is strong at the start because he’s keen to get going so he will need a strong owner and a Halti harness or similar might help. He does settle down into a nice plod once he’s calmed down. He has to stay on the lead because he has no recall whatsoever. Bullish stubbornness perhaps?
Excellent in the car: Chester is a happy boy in the car. He sits or lies down and wonder what exciting place he’s being taken to.
Chester’s favourite pastimes: He loves playing fetch, find the hidden treats or just amusing himself with his toy. He has a talent for chewing up supposedly indestructible toys but his foster carer has found one which is a match for him! He also loves greeting guests and just being with his human.
Chester’s dislikes: The hoover, the strimmer, anything noisy which he can’t see and cats!
Chester’s ideal home: He wants company most of the time and especially loves women. He likes the company of men but is a snuggly, soppy boy with the ladies. He wants a garden to mooch about in and short walks where he won’t be pestered by other dogs. Owners who will play games with him and appreciate his funny character and adorable face.
Health notes: Chester is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and flea treated. He does have epilepsy but it’s not nearly as scary as it sounds and doesn’t stop him enjoying life to the fullest. He’s on medication to manage it. He’s had two small fits since being in foster but they only last a couple of minutes and he recovers well. He takes it in his stumpy stride and once you’re used to it, it’s no big deal. He has to have his face folds cleaned everyday or they get itchy. He’s perfectly happily to have this done and it’s a bit like fuss for him. We were told that he had a tumour removed from his back 4 years ago but there’s no sign of any recurrence so we’re not too concerned.
More from Chester’s foster carer: Chester is his own boss. He likes affection, but will let you know when he’s not happy with you – the bulldog face! He really likes to play and needs things like treat balls to keep him occupied. He mustn’t be given bones unless they are really big, safe ones (he’s very greedy and has tried to swallow a whole bone). He likes balls etc. but does rip-up his toys, so is best with very hard-wearing rubber toys designed for strong jaws. Overall Chester has a lovely character. He will eat everything and anything. He enjoys a game of you showing him treats, then shutting him out of the room while you hide them, and then letting him in to “FIND!” them. He also likes watching any TV programme with animals and will run up and bark at them.

Chester can be rehomed anywhere on the UK mainland – the closer to his foster home the better though, subject to a satisfactory home visit. Note that you will be required to travel to the foster home to collect him.

If you would love to offer a home to an oldie but your circumstances aren’t suitable, perhaps you would be kind enough to sponsor one of the special oldies we are caring for that, due to health problems, are unlikely to be offered a permanent home.
