Joey is a lovely 13 year old Cocker Spaniel boy who came into the Oldies Club rescue due to his owner’s ill-health. Joey is in a foster home in Rochdale, Greater Manchester.

Good boy in foster care: Joey settled very quickly at his foster home and appeared untroubled by his change in circumstances, bless him. He is an easy-going boy who has been clean in the house with no accidents.

OK when left: We were told that Joey howls when left, but his foster carers haven’t found this to be the case. Although he would prefer a home with people around for a good part of the day, once he has eaten and had a walk, he generally just wants to curl up and sleep for a while.

Good with dogs: Joey is currently living with 2 other dogs, one large and one small, and there have been no problems at all. He isn’t an assertive dog though so may be pushed out by other dogs if they are that way inclined. Although he will defend his food, he is very easy going and will not push for attention. For this reason he may be happier to be an only dog, and so get more attention, but he is untroubled by other dogs and would fit in with them.

Fine with cats: Joey is sharing his foster home with 4 cats and he is untroubled by them and seems uninterested.

Fine with older children: Joey has been good with everyone he has met and is happy to be stroked. He should be fine to live with older children who understand an older dog’s need for quiet times.

Enjoys on-lead walks: Joey enjoys a walk and he walks very nicely on the lead. He has poor eyesight and is deaf so he is not let off the lead. He is currently having three walks per day of about 15 minutes each and he also enjoys a mooch around the garden.

Good in the car: Joey is fine in the car. He just settles in the back and dozes.

Sleeps downstairs: Joey is comfortable to spend the night in his own basket and will sleep in it wherever it is placed. He doesn’t usually go upstairs in his foster home.

Joey’s favourite pastimes: He enjoys walks and he likes to be stroked. He sleeps a lot. Joey really enjoys his food and he knows that he gets a tasty treat after a walk, so he speeds up as he approaches the house!

Joey’s ideal home: Joey would fit into most homes as he is such an easy-going boy. He will live in harmony with other dogs, but he would also enjoy being an only dog and getting more attention as he won’t push himself forward for attention. He can live with cats and should be fine with kind older children. A home where he will have company for a good part of the day would make him happy.

Health notes: Joey is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and flea treated. He has a number of lumps and bumps which are evident when he is closely shaved, but the vet said these are no problem. Joey has recently had a dental to clean his teeth, and had some removed, but he was untroubled by this. He has very poor sight and is deaf but he appears physically well, his appetite is good and he has no digestive issues.

More from Joey’s foster carer:Joey is friendly, easy-going, undemanding and problem-free. Joey has funny bark and sounds a bit like a seal! He is a placid boy though and is not noisy and does not demand attention. Joey is a pleasure to look after and has given us no problems. He gets on with other dogs and ignores cats. He walks happily on the lead and always has a waggy tail. We wish our own dogs were as well behaved as Joey!

Joey can be rehomed anywhere on the UK mainland – the closer to his foster home the better – subject to a satisfactory home visit. Note that you will be required to travel to the foster home to collect him.

If you would love to offer a home to an oldie but your circumstances aren’t suitable, perhaps you would be kind enough to sponsor one of the special oldies we are caring for that, due to health problems, are unlikely to be offered a permanent home.
