6/11/2023 UPDATE: Ben and Max can be rehomed separately too. Their carer has discovered that they could be separated and looking for different homes. They both have different requirements and levels of walks, patience and care. Ben and Max have been tested sleeping in separate rooms and taking them to work individually to see how the other reacts and they aren’t worried or reliant on each other.

Ben (aged 14, black & white) and Max (aged 8, brown & white) are an pair of Jack Russells who are being rehomed privately by their current carer who took them in when their owners were no longer able to keep them. They are in West Kirby, Wirral.

Ben and Max need a calm home either as your only pets, or perhaps with up to two other calm, small dogs. A quiet, adult home would be nice for them, but they should be OK with well-behaved, kind children aged 10+. They need someone home for at least half the day. You’ll need a secure garden and, indoors, a range of comfy beds. At night they sleep in a crate each, with a blanket to make it cosy and a safe den for them. In their temporary home they have got used to having a treat and blanket to say ‘night’ with, and access to an attached water bowl for a night time tipple!

Their temporary home has 6 other dogs, but Ben settled in quickly. Max is taking a little longer as he has never been socialised around other dogs and finds it a little overwhelming at times. He hides in his bed to take a moment for his wellbeing. He is eager to make friends with the other dogs though, he just needs to take his time.

They love company, but are OK to have a snooze while you go out for up to 4 hours (as long as you pass them a little treat on leaving and returning!). Max is calmer when left if he’s been for a little walk beforehand. He enjoys having a sniff and it calms his brain. Ben is more relaxed about being left but he is hard of hearing so he prefers to know there’s someone around most of the time.

Max loves attention, strokes, and cuddling up on the couch but he also likes to just be near you and will be your shadow around the house. Ben likes being stroked, but only if he sees your hand coming from right in front of him. Otherwise, the surprise of being touched without warning is scary for him and he jumps. In the photo below he is having a little snuggle on the couch watching the soaps.

On walks Ben is happy to make friends with other dogs. Even though he’s easily alarmed by interactions he doesn’t see or hear coming, he’s an affable little chap. Max tends to act aloof around dogs but he still has a big waggy tail. They walk really well together and have brand new fitted harnesses and matching leads, ready to go! Currently they have a walk four to five times a week and just potter about the garden on the other days, with Max having occasional zoomies. Max is strong on the lead for the first five minutes and then relaxes once he’s had a good sniff. Ben is excellent on the lead and a super chilled walker, but he doesn’t want to be hurried. Neither has any recall so they stay on the lead. Both are fine on car rides; they just need a blanket to sit on and a doggy seat belt.

Ben and Max are foodies so they love snacks, treats and chews. They need lots of nap time, especially Ben. They like snuffling in the garden and helping their human with whatever you’re doing.

Ben mustn’t be touched from anywhere other than the front, so that he sees you coming. He’ll flee with quite a turn of speed if touched unawares. Max needs a few weeks of someone being home and showing him life is OK, safe and settled and you aren’t going to give up on him. Both have had to adapt to a significant change after such a long time in the same house with the same routine. But they are resilient and ready to bounce back.

Being only 8, Max is a healthy boy. Ben is basically healthy too. His eyes are strong, but his hearing is only slight. His anxiety in a new home may cause him to do a few mini wees, but his current carer is combatting this with disposable nappies which he is happy to wear, and he should only need them until he settles and knows he is safe. He is otherwise very reliable about going to the back door wanting to be let out for wees. They are both neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and flea treated.

Ben and Max need routine, calmness, but a little fun too! They want wellness walks, cuddles, TV and snack time! Could you offer them this?

Ben & Max are being rehomed privately by Emma, who has confirmed that she will take them back if their new home doesn’t work out for any reason. Prospective adopters will be carefully homechecked.
