Lil’ Mabel is a 12-year-old French Bulldog who came into the Oldies Club rescue as her owner’s change of circumstances meant they could no longer care for her. She’s in a foster home in Welling, Kent where her carer’s attentions have seen her go from this…

…to this!

Happy girl in foster: Mabel settled in almost straight away, enjoying basking in the sunshine in the garden and instructing her foster carer on the types of toys she likes.

OK to leave sometimes: Mabel does love company and wants a home where there’s usually at least one of her people around but she can be left for a couple of hours when necessary. She’s good at snoozing!

Only pet: Mabel likes being the centre of attention and often tells other dogs on walks to keep their distance. She’s very interested in a cat who visits the garden at her foster home. They usually greet each other and sometimes Mabel tries to play with him. This would be misinterpreted by most cats so it’s safest if she’s an only pet. She chases pigeons in the garden too.

Good with children: Mabel could live with considerate, dog-savvy children as she’s a sweet-natured, fun-loving lady!

Loves short walks: Mabel has walks of about 20 minutes. She loves getting out and exploring! Her recall is hit-and-miss so a longline is very handy. She is excellent on a normal lead too. Her foster carer has some partially weight-bearing, stabilising wheels which have help Mabel build up the strength in her back legs. There’s been so much of an improvement that she now only uses them for walking (well, trundling) around the block. When wheel-free in a field, she gallivants, frolics and has a good old roll in the grass!

Good in the car: Exemplary, in fact. Adventuring in comfort, what bliss!

Mabel’s favourite pastimes: She loves fuss and cuddles (sofa cuddles especially), treats, playing games…

Mabel’s foster carer was trying to get some nice, relaxed photos of her for this page but Mabel just wanted to play!

…and adding to her toy collection.

Mabel’s dislikes: loud noises.

Mabel’s ideal home: She doesn’t do stairs so everything she needs has to be on one level. She particularly needs quick and easy access to the garden. When she arrived she was not housetrained or perhaps her slight disability is the cause but, although she’s improved greatly, she still has the odd accident. It’s spotting the signs and getting her out in the garden quickly that’s the key. Continuing to build up strength in her back legs will probably help too, giving her more control. Bless her! So, the most crucial thing in her new home is owners who love her so much they won’t bat an eyelid at such things and will lavish Mabel with TLC, many teddies and a range of comfy beds!

Health notes: Mabel is spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and worm/flea treted. The problem of weakness in her back legs is due to trauma. She’s currently on medication for them but is making such progress, it’s thought she might be able to come off it fairly soon. She also takes medication for allergies.

Mabel’s foster carer said: “She is now going to the field three times a week as we have been trying to build her muscles up on rear legs. We have seen an improvement as she now runs at the field and is starting to walk a bit further. This is all without her wheelchair. She does love going to the field always rolling and running about, and has finally learnt the word “walkies”.

“Mabel is a funny, lovable, little girl and doesn’t let her disability get in the way. We are happy for the wheels to go with her, for a suitable donation to Oldies Club. She loves attention from people she comes across, loves to chat to you and will follow you around the house. She barks when the oven timer goes off and she adores playing!”
