So cute and sweet, Jess is a 14-year-old Lhasa Apso x JRT, who came into rescue after her owner moved into accommodation where pets were not allowed. She is in an Oldies Club foster home in London, NW10, just waiting for someone to offer her a permanent home.
Summary: Jess is fairly independent and loves a good roll and a back scratch. She adores showing off her tricks for treats! Jess is definitely loyal and has a twinkle in her eye. Jess would be very happy living with a calm dog and likes to have human company.
Settled in foster: Jess realised after only a couple of days that this was her new life, but it really took a good couple of months before her personality started to shine through.
Needs company: Jess is not happy to be left alone. She is deaf so, when you leave the room, she feels that you have left her universe. After very careful conditioning, Jess can now be left alone for 1.5 hours on occasion, but in a new household this would have to built up to over time. She would not be happy living with full-time workers.
Could live with dogs: Jess is a confident and socially adept dog when out on walks. Her ideal home would have a larger, calm dog that she can look to for guidance; but she would be okay as an only dog. She will ignore other dogs but, if they come to investigate, she will reciprocate calmly. Occasionally, she will give a warning bark/lunge if dogs approach with energy that is too high for her liking, but there is no aggression at all. It’s believed that at a previous home she had resource guarded her food when other dogs were around.
Fine with cats: Jess is currently living with a resident cat that ignores her and she ignores the cat. It seems she would not have a problem living with cats.
Okay with older children: As Jess is deaf, children in the home would need to be mature enough to understand the implications of this. Therefore, children over 10 years old and dog-savvy would be best.
Enjoys walks: Jess mainly sticks close to her walker but on a clearly marked path she sometimes races ahead as she knows there’s no chance of her walker disappearing! Clever girl that she is, she checks back frequently and understands arm gestures for ‘come here’ and ‘that way’. Jess currently has a 45 – 60 minutes walk in the morning and sometimes a walk around the block in the evening.
Good in the car: Yes, she settles immediately wherever you put her in the passenger seat or behind a guard. She also recently had a trip into central London on the tube.
Jess’s favourite pastimes: She loves her food and enjoys her evening training/game sessions.
Jess’s dislikes: She has separation anxiety. It was quite severe to begin with but time left alone can be built up gradually and she is now okay for an hour or so. Jess is a little head shy and will back away if a hand comes from above towards her head.
Ideal home: Jess’s ideal home would have more than one human so that she will always have somebody around and a larger, calm dog to show her the ropes. The household would have quite set routines so she can relax and not panic every time someone moves from room to room. She is unfussed with traffic so rural or town would be fine and she doesn’t need a large garden. Jess is quite agile so stairs are not a problem. Ideally, she sleeps at the bottom of the bed but can be coaxed into sleeping next to the bed.
Health notes: Jess is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and flea-treated. Jess is deaf and she has a slight heart murmur that currently doesn’t need treatment. She had quite a few teeth extracted recently but still hasn’t remembered how to chew food! Jess has Cushing’s disease and is on medication for this. It does not impact her life at all, though this is a lifelong condition. She will need regular check-ups to ensure that the medication dosage is still correct.
More from Jess’s foster carer: It took a couple of months before Jess felt confident enough in her people and the routines to relax. That’s when her personality really started to shine. Prior to that, she was on constant alert, so her new carers will need to be patient with her. Jess is quite independent so when she asks for cuddles you feel very honoured. She loves a good roll and a back scratch and adores showing off her tricks – as long as there is food involved. She is a careful thinker and you can see the cogs turning when she is making a decision or problem solving. If you want a dog that is loyal, not overly demanding and with a bit of a twinkle in her eye then Jess is the dog for you.

If you would love to offer a home to an oldie but your circumstances aren’t suitable, perhaps you would be kind enough to sponsor one of the special oldies we are caring for that, due to health problems, are unlikely to be offered a permanent home.
