19/5/24 – Little Ricky has gone off to his new home today. Have a lovely time there, Ricky!

Ricky is an adorable 10-year-old Jack Russell Terrier who came into our rescue after his owner passed away. He is in an Oldies Club foster home in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, waiting for someone to offer him a permanent home.

Summary: Ricky is a super little chap who settled at his foster home straight away – it was as though he had lived there all his years! He picked his spot on the sofa and that was it. He enjoys the company of children, is excellent in the car, and would make a perfect motorhoming companion. He hasn’t lived with dogs or cats before so would be best as your only pet. Nothing seems to faze Ricky and his fosterer says he’s bombproof. He’s our little Mr Reliable!

Can be left for short periods: Ricky would love a home with someone around most of the time, but he is fine when you pop out for an hour or so. He sits at the door waiting for your return, and so for this reason Ricky needs a home with people who do not go out of the house to work. He wants to have his person at home with him as much as possible.

Not lived with dogs: Ricky has never lived with another dog. He will say hello to dogs while on a walk, or ignore them. As he has only ever been a single dog, we assume that he would prefer to be the only dog in his new home.

Not lived with cats: Ricky has never lived with cats. He saw one on a walk and wasn’t fazed by it, but as he doesn’t have cat experience we will be looking for a cat-free home for him.

Good with children: Ricky is brilliant around the 4-year-old that visits his foster home each week. He greets her with a sniff, she gives him a stroke, and he just sits and watches her play until he falls asleep. Ricky has bonded very well with his foster carer’s 15-year-old son too and Ricky gets on his bed in the morning for cuddles, and also in the evening before bed. Ricky’s foster carer thinks that he could live with kind children aged 6+, so long as they are dog-savvy and well supervised.

Loves walks: Ricky is a really good boy on walks. He comes when called (most of the time!) and he loves sniffing and exploring new places. He particularly loves walks in the woods: he has been on the beach but he wasn’t too keen. Ricky can be walked for up to an hour at one go, but he’s also happy to have two or three 20-minute walks a day. He also enjoys pottering in the garden.

Excellent in the car: Ricky is a fabulous little traveller. His foster carer uses a dog seat belt that connects to his harness. You put him in, and by the time you’ve got yourself into the driver’s seat, he’s already curled up relaxing. What a star!

Ricky’s favourite pastimes: His favourite thing is being snuggled up with his person. He loves to give you cuddles, and if you say to him “love me” he will lay his head on you and love you. Apart from snuggling, he loves walks too. Ricky doesn’t play with toys but he will run after you in the garden and play chase with you.

Bombproof: Ricky doesn’t seem frightened of anything. His foster carer describes him as being “bombproof: from loud traffic, to seeing a hedgehog in the garden, to even a balloon popping (I over blew it) and he just looked at me as if to say “well that was daft” – he just wasn’t fazed.

Ricky’s ideal home: The perfect home for Ricky would be with a retired person or couple who enjoy going for leisurely walks and who will take him for days out and perhaps travelling in a motorhome etc. At night Ricky sleeps on the sofa or the bed, so would love a home where he would be allowed to sleep on your bed.

Health notes: Ricky has just been neutered. He is vaccinated and microchipped and has been wormed and flea-treated. At his vet check, no health problems were found and the vet commented on how rare it is for an older dog to be in such good health!

More from his foster carer:Ricky is loving, relaxed, friendly and amazing. All Ricky wants is to be loved and to love. He is at his happiest snuggling up to you and is the most perfect dog I have ever met. Everyone in the extended foster family has bonded with Ricky and he will definitely be missed. He is such a special lad and his new family will be very lucky to have him.

If you would like to offer Ricky a permanent home, please read our Adoption Procedures for information about the adoption process. You can then contact an Oldies Club Rehoming Coordinator as follows:

Email: rehome@oldies.org.uk
Telephone: 0844 586 8656

He can be rehomed anywhere on the UK mainland – the closer to his foster home the better – subject to a satisfactory home visit. Note that you will be required to travel to the foster home to collect him.

If you would love to offer a home to an oldie but your circumstances aren’t suitable, perhaps you would be kind enough to sponsor one of the special oldies we are caring for that, due to health problems, are unlikely to be offered a permanent home.
