Sophie is a very pretty 11 years old Crossbreed who came into Oldies Club care in January 2024 after her owner sadly passed away. When she first arrived in foster she was sick but she seemed to settle in quickly and began to accompany her fosterer on his farm visits. Sophie again started showing signs of feeling sick and a vet visit revealed that she was relatively healthy but some older dogs are prone to stomach upsets, after a bland diet this settled down again.
Sophie’s fosterer noticed that she was rather intensely licking herself and one investigation found a lump with looked like a possible hernia or prolapse. The vet managed to pop it back in and gave Sophie antibiotics to combat the infection. Unfortunately it prolapsed again so Sophie was taken back to the vets. As well as this it was revealed she had an infection so was prescribed a cream and further antibiotics. Thankfully this helped to clear this up. Unfortunately the prolapse remained which the vet thought was unusual so they discussed it with a specialist and decided an investigation under anaesthetic would be the best route. This involved a scan, internal examination and a biopsy being taken.
Sadly on a post op check it was confirmed that the lump was in fact cancerous. A number of options were discussed with the vets and in the end palliative care was decided upon and to keep Sophie as comfortable as possible.
Due to her medical issues and unknown time left, it was decided that Sophie would be placed in our sponsor dog scheme. This means she will remain in her lovely foster home on a permanent basis, with the charity paying her vet bills for the rest of her life.
Sophie is happy and has no idea that she is terminally ill. She enjoys life including her walkies and running around. She is a loyal girl and loves her fosterers especially the male one who she likes to follow around. The other jokes she’s just here to provide food.
Due to her coat Sophie requires regular brushing. She visits the groomers monthly. She isn’t keen on it but tolerates it well and comes home looking beautiful. Sophie loves being stroked and if her fosterers stop, she’ll gently nudge them to carry on.
Sophie enjoys the company of other dogs and used to live with others before she came into Oldies Club care. She regularly spends time with the fosterers’ daughter’s dog and there is a local monthly walking group which they go out with.
Sophie recently went on holiday with her fosterers to Scotland. She was very popular and many people asked about her. Her fosterers took the opportunity to tell them about Oldies Club and the work the rescue does to help older dogs in need.
Sophie’s fosterers say that she is the perfect dog. She has a wonderful nature, is so polite and easy to love.
If you would love to offer a home to an oldie but your circumstances aren’t suitable, perhaps you would be kind enough to sponsor Sophie, or one of the other special oldies we are caring for in our sponsor dog scheme.
