Gentle Jack is a small, short-coated, black Terrier and weighs 7kg. He has been aged by the vet as around 10 years old but his exact date of birth is not known. He came to Chilterns Dog Rescue in Tring, Hertfordshire, as a stray in December and was not claimed. No one else had space to take him but they managed to find ‘space at the inn!’ and Jack is now hoping the new year will bring him better luck.
Jack was a poor little old man when he arrived, mainly due to the appalling state of his teeth, but you can see see from the photos how much better he is in just a few short weeks. He was very traumatised on entry, underweight and quite unsteady on his legs. However, with lots of TLC, he has really come out of himself and looks a different dog.
As the days pass and Jack’s sense of security grows, a happier and more confident little dog is emerging. He is showing all the signs he could build a special bond with the right new owner and enjoy a happy retirement.
Jack is hoping for a quiet, adult-only home with a secure garden he can potter around in to his heart’s content. Jack would probably prefer to be the only dog in the home. Short walks, company, a cosy bed and someone with time and patience to support him in his later years would be perfect.
Jack now enjoys his short walks and just sitting quietly in the Rescue Centre office with the staff and volunteers. Jack does not expect a lot of attention, perhaps an indication of his previous life. He is still quite reserved and, while he appreciates kind words and a gentle stroke, he is not a cuddly or overtly affectionate dog.
On arrival, Jack was unable to eat properly and tried to store uneaten food in his bed for later. This low level resource guarding has diminished since his dental treatment made eating more comfortable and has not proved a problem during his stay. It is perhaps a habit his new owner would need to manage in the early days.
Jack has had extensive dental treatment which included 11 extractions but he has recovered well from this and, apart from some joint stiffness in his legs and a mild heart murmur, has no known health conditions.
