Poor Jake came to Wonky Pets Rescue from the stray pound after being found wandering. He had been neglected over a long period of time by his former owner and his poor mouth had been left to get into a terrible state; what were left of his teeth were so rotten they were falling out of his mouth which was badly infected. Shockingly, he needed every tooth removed. It was found that the damage had been left so long, it had eaten into his jaw bone and left him with a broken jaw. Because the surrounding bone was so damaged, it can’t be plated but it does remain quite stable, and now his mouth is all healed from infection he finds eating much more comfortable.
Jake has just turned 14yrs old and he is a smooth coated Chihuahua. He is being fostered in Longbridge, Birmingham but can be rehomed further afield subject to a home check. He may be small but he has a huge heart and a big personality. He is a great little dog who, despite feeling so poorly on arrival (he also contracted kennel cough at the stray pound), settled into his foster home straight away and was straight on his fosterer’s lap looking for cuddles and attention.
Jake is proving to be a very loyal, loving and attentive little chap who gets very attached to his person and loves to follow you around wherever you go, which means of course he also likes to come to bed with you at night and snuggle under a blanket. He is a proper lap dog who loves nothing more than to be snoozing on the sofa with you.
Jake does form a strong bond with his person (he lived with an elderly person before) and needs company a lot of the time. He will bark for some time when left before eventually settling down, so he will need someone either home most of the time or a home where disturbing neighbours is not going to be an issue. He needs a home with a nice secure garden to potter in too.
Jake walks well on the lead and is happy travelling in the car too. He loves his little walks and will need a home where he can go out for a short walk daily. He is generally okay meeting other dogs when out on a walk but doesn’t want them up in his face. He will need to be the only dog in the home and sadly cannot live with cats. Resident children should be older and quiet (he is fine with younger visiting children).
Jake has been a bit of a picky eater but he likes Caesar in Gravy which is easy for him to eat without teeth and he is also partial to a bit of fish. He, of course, enjoys some soft treats too. He does go out to the toilet but will have the odd accident in the house This is probably down to his past when his previous owner wasn’t really capable of letting him out regularly.
In addition to his rotten mouth, it was also discovered that Jake had a significant heart murmur (Grade 4). A heart scan revealed that he has early stage Mitral Valve disease but he has a strong and regular heartbeat and no enlargement of the heart. He is taking a low dose of medication to support his heart going forward and this will help to slow down any progression of the disease further. He will come with at least 3 months’ supply and will just need 6 monthly check-ups on his heart going forward (his medication is under £10 per month).
Jake is neutered, microchipped and flea/worm treated. He will be rehomed with 5 weeks’ free pet insurance.
