10 August 2014: More sad news for everyone at Oldies Club :-( Sam came into our care in rather a state and it was decided he should stay as a long term foster due to his multiple medical conditions. He flourished in foster care, but sadly it was discovered he has a large mass in his stomach. Our thoughts are with his foster family who gave him such a wonderful home for the last months of his life. Sleep tight Sam.
Super Sam is an eleven year old yellow Labrador boy, who has recently joined our sponsor dog scheme due to various health concerns.
Sam recently had to undergo surgery after a lump was detected in his stomach. We’re all very glad that Sam is now back at his lovely foster home and recovering well after the operation :-)
The bill for Sam’s vet care since coming into Oldies Club care is expected to be in the region of £2,300, which includes the recent surgery/recovery care, plus the medication and tests he was given before the operation. This is obviously a lot of money for a small charity, so if you are able to make a donation to help with this, we would all be very grateful. Please CLICK HERE to donate towards Sam’s vet bills. Thank you :-)
Sam says ‘thank you’ to everyone who has donated towards his vet bill :-)
Sam arrived in Oldies Club care in 2013 and settled very quickly into his foster home with his new human and animal friends. He shares his home with a lovely Golden Retriever girl, who has welcomed him into her home :-)
The two friends are happy to share ‘boot’-space too. Sam tends to curl up and go to sleep, but does need a bit of help getting in and out of the car.
Sam has also made friends with the two cats he now lives with. He loves to follow them about and give them a clean:
Sam absolutely adores his walks and is happy to walk for around six miles/two hours, across all sorts of terrain and still be up for more! He usually has a long walk in the morning and a second walk in the evening, but is happy to go out whenever a walk is on offer. He likes to socialise, but still loves his walks even if he doesn’t meet any other dogs while out.
Sam is very well behaved on the lead and walks nicely at the side of his walking companion (especially if he is carrying a ball), tail wagging constantly. Off the lead he is also very good and will often pad along at your side then too. Unfortunately due to the untreated ear infection he had when he arrived in Oldies Club care, he is almost totally deaf which makes recall a problem if he cannot see you. However he does respond to hand signals (when he sees them). His foster family know to anticipate when there might be a problem, such as at approaches to roads or if Sam has picked up a scent and Sam still gets to enjoy being off lead.
Sam’s favourite pastimes are going for walks, especially in the countryside, and playing with a tennis ball. If you’ll play ball with him, he’ll be your best friend! We’re not so sure he’s thrilled about having a shower though!
Sam’s foster family says he is a very docile and trusting boy who is loyal and affectionate and has lots of love to give. He enjoys spending time with his new human and animal family members and really prefers to have someone at home with him as much as possible. Sam is very biddable and shows a willingness to learn new things.
Sam is fine with children and enjoys playing with his foster family’s granddaughter when she visits. Oldies Club and its foster carers do of course support the guidance that dogs and children should always be supervised carefully when together to ensure safe and enjoyable interaction for all :-)
Sam and friends.
Although Sam arrived with various ailments which must have been distressing and painful for him, he has always been docile and gentle during the upheaval to his new home and when receiving treatment for his health problems.
Super Sam, wearing a ‘poorly’ bandage.
