Update 15 June 2012: Very sorry to have to let you all know that Rosie has very sadly passed away :-( We are very grateful to Rosie’s family, who took her in and fosterered her for Oldies Club and showed her such love. Our thoughts are with them. Sleep well dear Rosie.

*******

Rosie is a 12 year old Collie x Labrador who came into Oldies Club foster care after her owner died. Unfortunately, Rosie has experienced various health problems including a cough, lameness and regular stomach troubles and with all this in mind, the charity felt it unfair to offer her for adoption and see her moved to a new home, so decided to make her a sponsor dog. This means she will remain in permanent foster care, with Oldies Club covering her vet bills for the rest of her life. We are very grateful to her foster family for taking such great care of her :)

A new photo of Rosie taken February 2012 – doesn’t she have a lovely smiley face?

Many black and greying crossbreeds struggle to draw the interest of potential adopters even when they are in good health. There had been little interest in adopting Rosie since she came into Oldies Club care in April. We think she is a beautiful girl though – don’t you agree?

Dear Rosie :)

Rosie’s foster mum tells us that she is an amusing and affectionate old lady who likes to smile for the camera. She has a lovely character and very sweet little white toes. She settled into her foster home well and is fine to be left alone for a few hours, when she just takes a nap.

This lovely girl is good with all visitors and really loves being around people, including children. In typical Lab style, she will go and find her favourite toy to bring a visitor as a present. She barks to let her foster family know that a visitor has arrived and then settles immediately :)

Rosie is fine with dogs when out on walks. She loves socialising with small and medium-sized dogs, but she is occasionally wary of very large dogs and might have a little growl at the odd one. Her foster carer had a lurcher and a whippet visit for an afternoon and she was fine with them after proper introductions. Rosie is not so fond of cats and will try to chase them!

Rosie requires regular medication for arthritis, the cost of which Oldies Club will cover for life. Due to this condition, she is best walked little and often and is currently walked 3 or 4 times a day for about 20 minutes. Rosie loves to sniff, and her walks consist of a gentle stroll with stops when she finds something interesting to smell. Rosie never strays too far and she is good on the lead, although if she’s sees a cat she will pull.

Getting in and out of a car is difficult for Rosie due to her stiff legs, so she needs a ramp, but once she is in, she is fine and enjoys the ride!

Rosie is a very intellligent dog and is interested in everything. She loves playing with her squeaky toys and being gently chased around the room! Rosie is very affectionate and gives lovely gentle nudges with her nose. Her other great pleasure is sniffing when out walking.

In addition to her arthritis, which has resulted in a pronounced limp on her right front leg and stiffness in her back legs, Rosie has symptoms similar to those of colitis. She is managed with a sensitivity diet and has been prescribed medication. Although she faces these health issues, her foster mum says they are manageable and that Rosie doesn’t let them get in the way of enjoying life :)

Rosie’s fosterer says: “Rosie is a real delight to have around. She is a naturally happy dog with a lovely nature. She makes us laugh a lot as she is still so playful (she adores her squeaky toy) and she’s very inquisitive – all shopping bags are carefully inspected. Rosie loves people, is very affectionate and has a real sense of humour. She has the perfect mix of playfulness, intelligence and affection. Rosie does require some management of her health issues but she is doing well on her current diet and medication. Rosie repays this care a hundred times over and every day she makes us laugh with her lovely character and affectionate ways.”
